You, Me, Empathy - Episode 99: Vagina Problems with Lara Parker

Lara Parker, writer at Buzzfeed, shares her experience living with endometriosis, masturbation as self-care, cannabis for pain, and sex on Episode 99 of You, Me, Empathy.

On Episode 99 of You, Me, Empathy, Lara Parker and I explore taking ownership of our bodies, masturbation as self-care, the gaslighting of women in pain, and the struggles and resilience of living with Vaginismus, Vulvodynia, and Endometriosis.

Starting off the show, Lara and I talk about being our own health advocates, and believing that our pain is real and is not a sign of weakness—even if that pain is not immediately or actually perceivable by anyone else. It’s still our pain, still our bodies, and that’s valid and real. On that validity conversation, Lara shares her experience being invalidated by so much of the medical world, including doctors telling her her pain is “all in her head” and she’s “being dramatic.” Ugh.

May I just say this for a moment? We need to believe each other. Believe feely humans. BELIEVE WOMEN.

We also gab about doubting our own pain, the exhaustion of trying to cure yourself of something that feels like can’t be cured, reacquainting our bodies for pleasure, cannabis for pain management, and Lara’s journey with Vaginismus, Vulvodynia, and Endometriosis. Lara opens up about the pain she experiences daily, how she can’t have penetrative sex—and how that’s led to the realization that sex is more than just penis and vagina— dating with endometriosis, shame, and Lara’s new book, Vagina Problems, which comes out next year! Plus so much more!
