You, Me, Empathy - Episode 41: Conspiracy Theories and Mental Illness with Brian Dunning

On Episode 41 of You, Me, Empathy, Brian Dunning, creator of Skeptoid, and I explore the relationship between conspiracy theories and mental illness, how humans come to believe conspiracy theories, and how life experiences impact and filter our conspiratorial tendencies.

We also talk about our innate human desire to control our environment when we’re struggling or flailing or grasping at straws in our mental health, when beliefs become illness, how empathy fits into the skeptical worldview, how we find common ground with people who are coming from a skeptical place and people coming from a conspiratorial place, and the misconception that conspiracy theories come out of mental illness.

Brian also talks about his recently published book. Conspiracies Declassified, and shares some of his favorite conspiracy theory stories, including the Lucifer Project and . . . moon rocks!
